What do you love about NY

A visual poem to one person's love of NY using Legos as mini sculptures. Covering everything from the Gowanus Canal to a plastic bag caught in a tree Christoph Neimann creatively captures what it means to be a New Yorker. Makes you want to grab a bag of Legos and make your own book.

We're not in Kansas anymore.

This is the view from out our back door here at Scaredy Kat. The tornado-like storm that came through on Thursday brought a giant tree from 3 doors down crashing into our yard. We count ourselves lucky since it fell at the perfect angle and if had veered in any direction it would have done much more damage.
Click on the photo montage above for a closer view of the wreckage.

BIKE SNOB is back!

Back in time for autumnal cycling through the leaves is the BIKE SNOB. Written by the author of the blog bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com it is a hilarious (and useful) look at the ins and outs of the cycling world.

A Public Service Reminder

Earlier this summer we went to a county fair in NJ and came upon an old friend. An icon from our childhood and a reminder of the danger of fire and especially forest fires. All hail Smokey The Bear.

Birthdays!

Since it was Mr. Kat's B-Day this week it seems appropriate that we just got in the new Momiji - Birthday Girl doll. Cake anyone?

Created in England, Momiji are palm-sized dolls with a secret opening at the bottom used to store messages on tiny slips of paper. Think fortune cookie-meets-matryoshka dolls

Mad love

We are mad about Mad Men and it turns out that Mad Men star Elizabeth Moss is mad about Scaredy Kat. In today's NY Post here is what she has to say about us:

Scaredy Kat, 232 Fifth Ave., Park Slope, Brooklyn

“It’s the most amazing card shop. I wish I lived closer to it, because I’d be there every day. You think, ‘card shop, that can’t be that big of a deal.’ But when you go there, you get it. It has the most amazing cards ever. They have these cards that no one will have ever seen before. They’re very individual, and not only do they look really cool, but they have great quotes. You can go there and find the exact perfect card for the person you want.”

A big thank you to Ms. Moss and we can't wait to see what adventures are in store for Peggy in Season 4 of Mad Men.

Easter is just around the corner.

As the sun has been shining this week - it almost seems like magic that the pall of winter has been lifted and that spring (along with the Easter Bunny) is right around the corner. Yea!!!

Best of luck.

May the luck of the Irish be with you this week and especially with the expected hangover on March 18th. Cheers!

Did we mention...

Did we mention that last year we went to the NJ State Fair? Well we did! From the first costumed vegetable to the last crumb of funnel cake it was a grand time.

Who doesn't love the Jonas Brothers? Molly sure does.

And to top it off - The Demolition Derby. Gladiator style noise, exhaust fumes and the smell of burning rubber. Nothing like it.

Happy New Year

Here we are in 2010 and for us at Scaredy Kat it feels like we have completed a cycle. It was just after the holidays last year that we saw a for rent sign that was only up for a few hours. That was the moment that started the idea of moving across the street and began a whole new chapter in the land of Scaredy Kat. We feel grateful and honored to have been able to do what we have in the last year and it is all because of the continued support of our friends and customers that it could happen. Thank you for making it possible and as we have been saying the last couple of days....

It's 2010 - Let The Party Begin!
